This game has a beautiful aesthetic, the characters were likeable, I liked how it gave focus to the care system and I enjoyed that this game gave a deeper understanding of characters feelings and struggles-obviously!
However
The game focused way too much on the investigative side of things (if you can call it that?). The amount of scenes that did not bear some focus into the investigation of Gabe's death I could easily count on one hand. However, when ultimately you're always going to find out what happened and the investigation is easy to uncover, it felt very unfulfilling and I felt like although obviously the 'investigation' was important it shouldn't have been the main angle. In the original life is strange Max and Chloe are at the heart of the game, not the investigation into Rachel Amber's death. In life is strange 2 -my personal favourite- Sean and Daniel are the glue that holds the story together irrespective of the other characters and settings they encounter. But in Life is strange true colors, the only centre point is Alex and the fact Gabe died at the end of the first chapter also meant that I had no real connection with him at all.
Additionally, although I liked almost all of the characters, the game is so short and there are so many recurring characters, I didn't feel there was enough screen time for any of them and I didn't feel like I really got to know any of them as much as I'd have liked to. I also felt that some scenes were nipped in the bud too quickly, particularly the scene in the tavern at the end where Alex is unveiling the truth and following that, was cut short and didn't explore the reactions of the townspeople enough.
Furthermore, this is the first life is strange game where I didn't feel like my decisions really bore any effect on the overall outcome of the game, apart from in terms of choosing who to date, which felt way too heavily focused upon for me and given the fact the same thing occurs in life is strange 2 felt tedious to be going through again. Alex's power was intriguing and gave insight into characters feelings and why they felt the way they did, but I feel like it could have been more creative in the way that it showed intense emotions from a cinematic perspective.
Moreover, the game brands itself as open world but I was disappointed to find that bar the park and main Street of the town and a handful of shops, it really wasn't. I can understand that in these sort of games, where certain things have to happen at some point, that it's harder to achieve open world and it's not even something I personally need in a game like this, but I just felt like it was wrong to place so much emphasis on this in advertising.
Lastly-and this is personal preference- but I felt that the game was lacking in some of the dramatics I'd personally enjoyed in the other two games. There were no scenes that got my heart pounding or had me on the edge of my seat, and this is something that I felt lis, lis before the storm and lis 2 achieved and did well, whilst also seeming plausible. But due to this, it took that edge of excitement out of the game for me.
I am a huge fan of life is strange and although I am glad I played this game, I wouldn't play it again unlike all of the other games in the series, and feel that ultimately they missed the mark with this game.
