I wonder if the writers meant Alice to be as irritating as we found her to be. Selfish and self-centered her lines were infuriatingly infantile all the way through the series. Aren't lead character supposed to "grow" through the story. There doesn't seem to be a moment of real self reflection written into Alice's character. On the other hand, in scene after scene her daughter Charlotte is nearly always the adult in the room--which I suppose was the comedy part of this series. Wonderful seasoned actors played both sets of parents and its always great to see them and in this case they kept the plot interesting, as did all the supporting characters.
