Like many Coen Bros. movies, Lebowski works on so many levels. Epic bro pic? Absolutely. Surreal musical? Check. Underdog heist flick? Yup. Goofy character comedy? Yes again.
Peel away the onion, and you find at the center a brilliant allegory for all major philosophies and religions, universal truth and beauty. The Dude as symbol for Christ/Buddha with The Cowboy Traveler (Sam Elliott) as omnipresent voice of God, just watching, mildly amused as man’s many imperfect philosophies clash in a futile race against time and death? Yes a thousand times. May the next incarnation of the little dude keep ‘er real... for all us sinners.
Dear god I love this film.
