I'll admit, it's been quite a few years since I read Jack O'Brien's series. Back in the 1950s, however, this adventure was able to capture the excitement of life as it had been (and in a few places still continued) for the hardy adventurous spirit. Like "Call of the Wild" but looking at the relationship between man and dog more from the human perspective, I found it gripping and incredibly "alive". I don't know if it would still have that effect for a modern youth with so much awareness of portable electronics, satellite communications, and motorized transportation in the arctic. But in the "old days" it was a total rush. The successor novels were as good.
