Flowery language for the sake of flowery language makes this book completely unreadable, even amongst the literary academics it is written for. Whereas skilled academic writers will make the complicated simple, Freedman makes the simple complicated, apparently consulting a thesaurus for every word and picking out the longest option listed, regardless of whether or not that substituted word makes any sort of sense in the book's context. Regardless of whether you might agree with Freedman's arguments or not, this book should be avoided, if only to prevent the headaches that the intolerable writing will otherwise give you.
