This film not only is the best film of 2021, but possibly the best film of this new decade, and most definitely a defining film in Nicolas Cages career.
Cages delivery is not what one would expect from him, as his usual overly dramatic and expressive acting is what people think of him, in Pig, however, he gives an amazing performance, in which he suits the somber tone of the film perfectly.
He initially has few lines in the film, building up mystery around his character, but as the movie progresses from the first act to the following two, more dialogue is incorporated, thus building his character.
The direction from Michael Sarnoski is superb, especially from a directorial debut. His writing is superb, and creates a melancholic atmosphere. The film has little violence yet is able to build suspense and tension through conversation and drawn out pauses, which further create a mood for the film.
The plot, at first seems absurd, and from the trails seems to be a film which is possibly a mix between John Wick and Ratatouille. However as we delve deeper into the film we find that the climax is, infact, similar to ratatouille, however the violence is not there. However in saying that if this movie did have the extremity of violence as John Wick it would take away from the superb writing, direction, cinematography and acting.
The minimal violence which is seem in the film is in an underground fighting ring of sorts. From skimming through the comments it was bizarre to me that many people dis-liked or didn't understand this scene. The fighting ring is where waiters and restaurant workers bid to be able to beat up the chefs, thus why there is biding, and why there is so much bid on Robin (Nicholas Cage), as he used to be a big chef.
Overall, Pig is a cinematic masterpiece and a clear nominee for best actor, best cinematography or best screenwriting. Both Nicholas cage, Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin all give incredible performances, which is aided by Michael Sarnoski's immaculate directing. A must watch film if you are a fan of film in general.
