You know this was going to be a 4-star review. There were moments watching the first season where I lost faith, pun intended, in the story being told, and the characters' journey. After finishing the season though, I can't seem to remember why I had that reaction. I think this speaks to the strength of the finale. It's very easy for shows to fall into the cliffhanger trap. A standard ten-episode season doesn't leave a whole lot of room to tell a complete story, and the push to build a franchise is ever-present. The best shows take the time to have a solid beginning and ending with just a dash of foreshadowing of a continued narrative. For all its first season stumbles I think Warrior Nun succeeded in doing that.
What was initially so attractive about this show, besides being able to yell "Nun Fight!", was the wonder and joy Ava feels at experiencing the world for the first time. Her experience is especially relatable right now in the midst of a global pandemic. Who else misses walking on the beach?
Ava's journey through her second life is slow and at times petulant, but the eventual strength, trust, and family she finds are well deserved. By the end of this first chapter, I feel fulfilled and excited for more. I definitely recommend this based on a comic action-adventure show.
