Another excellent and thoughtful drama from Netflix. Although its title is Maid, its really about something more profound, which many women experience in their lives. Its about domestic abuse - but domestic abuse where no one is physically beaten or hit, instead its emotional abuse, but abuse where the woman still lives in fear. The central performance by Margaret Qualley is self contained and believable, and there's a splendid turn by Andie MacDowall as her hippy mum, and as she is Margaret Qualleys real mother there is a chemistry between the two of them that comes with that.
Best of all, it's a human drama. Everyone is flawed for various reasons that become apparent. Even our heroine makes questionable decisions, and when her ex turns up at a party with a slightly younger woman she can't help but have a little snipe at him - even though his new girlfriend is 20 and perfectly age appropriate. Its all very real, well written, and well observed, and really not as depressing as it might sound.
I suspect this drama will be up for several awards.
