Minor spoilers ahead. I tried to be as spoiler free as I could.
Godzilla vs. Kong is a $160 million disappointment. The plot of the movie would be good, if there weren't so many plot lines to follow, and maybe if some of them actually got explained. There are way too many characters for the film's own good, and with four (3, depending on how you look at it) storylines going on at once, its no wonder you never get to know any of the characters. They simply exist as a vessel to drive the plot forward, seemingly knowing everything about the world around them so they can tell the audience, often making you feel as though the film is made for idiots. within each storyline, they are some characters that don't even play an actual part in the story, and who's relation to other characters is never explained, though this is not particular to any single character. Not only that, but the old trope of "lost a loved one" is far too prominent in this godforsaken movie as a motive for the protagonist's actions. Speaking of motives, what is the motive for the bad guys again? I didn't catch that. What will making humans the apex predator do for you exactly? Money? I'm just lost. On top of that, the movie throws out all the setup from KOTM, like hollow Earth and the Ghidora skulls, but changes each of them so there isn't really any continuity between the two films. Speaking of continuity, the powers of Godzilla and Kong are totally inconsistent with not only KOTM and Skull Island, but also within the movie itself. Godzilla's breath can go through the entire planet, but not a piece of metal or a big monkey? Godzilla cant be hurt by any weapon in KOTM (except the oxygen destroyer), but he can in this movie? This version of Godzilla isn't the same as it was in KOTM: it seems to me that this is Godzilla 1998 in the Legendary G's body. Plus, the film throws away one of Godzilla's most famous enemies just for spectacle, not even giving the character a proper set up, and having it rampage with zero explanation. The movie ends in a very non-comital way that shows Godzilla and Kong as equals, which, based on Skull Island and KOTM, is not the case.
Final impression: Godzilla vs. Kong manages to take the lore and story behind 3 amazing movies and throw it in the garbage bin. With only one real character (I love you Bernie) and, give or take, 7 other shells, GvK relies on only the most basic frame of a plot to drive the story into monster action, which although well animated, leaves a lot to be desired with movement and continuity, often being anticlimactic and leaving you with a feeling of "oh... that's it?"
