Grisham has the ability to captivate his readers and to endear characters to them, whether in his legal thrillers, those dealing with race or his "lighter" sports books. The "Sooley" character, even with his later flaws, does indeed leave the reader smitten with him, but there are too many holes in the story and too many obviously unrealistic moments to rate this as anything greater than subpar from a usually terrific writer.
