I had to read this book for my Caribbean History course and I can say that it is genuinely not a good book. I entirely agree with the points made by Kincaid that European settlers were the main cause of corruption and the collapse of civilizations throughout the Caribbean, but Kincaid has no idea what she is doing or how to write in a historical sense.
She has an obvious bias about Europeans, borderline insulting them throughout the book, has no citations or sources, giving the book a huge lack of credibility, no dates, no statistics, nothing. Yet Kincaid has the time to describe the damn St. John's library for three pages straight without giving any hint of relevant nor useful information. The book could have been cut in less than half if Kincaid just took a few minuets to reread her work and cut out all the useless information and replace it with useful information. But otherwise A Small Place is a 90 page book with around 20 pages of actually useful information.
If you plan to assign this to your students then PLEASE reconsider. This book is a biased joke which I would almost consider haggard to the documentation of history...
It is difficult to write about because it has little to no substance, and is the first book which I have actually regretted reading and felt has been an absolute waste of time and money.
