This was a hard review to write. I did like some of the concepts but the part of the book I was most looking forward to led me into 23 pages of Christian rhetoric.
What I liked:
The exercises provide a useful framework to prompt and urge you into thought, particularly you've not started thinking about a career change. There are several references to online sources where you can buy templates, but you can create them yourself in not too much time. I like the concept of the petal bringing together all the most important factors into one accessible page.
What I didn't like:
It’s a little heavy on self-praise for the author and the great successes he’s had with the book. In that regard it very much is a self-help book and with that comes some wordy faff as well as repetition and irrelevant images. I’m ok with that, they may as well build the book out a bit.
I was looking forward to the section "Finding your mission in life". If this is your core goal in buying this book, don't. Look, I am Christian so do not take this the wrong way… but a job hunt book really is not the place for doling out missionary text relating to my purpose relating to God. Bolles is right, I was horrified to find this section in the book. I suspect it won’t help the majority of readers get any closer to finding their true calling at all. Honestly, it immediately made me lose all confidence in the rest of the book and narrative.
At least let readers know what they’re getting themselves into.
