The beginning had promise to me - I felt like the Kens got a taste of what women feel like in “the real world”. Kens just wanted to be looked at and were always told by Barbie what to do, how to dress, and how far they could wander away from their protector and purpose-creator - Barbie. One line even mentioned, “Don’t get in trouble,” after having followed Barbie to the real-world and having already been arrested twice. I get the satire and humor behind that line, but it just seemed out of place and didn’t really deliver. It almost came across as “not a joke”, which ruined it for me. If Ryan Gosling didn’t respond in an overly dramatic way, saying “I WON’T,” I don’t think the joke would have hit home for me. I LOVED the Billy Eilish’s rendition of “What Was I Made For” - absolutely beautiful and tear-jerking. Probably one of the greatest displays of vocal talent in 2023 (alongside Tems and Ayra Starr. I digress.) There were concepts of Barbies that were discontinued, which I thought was a good touch, but the way it was implemented under-delivered for me. Barbie’s ending didn’t seem to paint the picture that Barbie’s legacy is notorious for - framing the way women think about themselves. Obviously, I am not a woman, so I do not get it, but it seemed like the movie just ended with Barbie not knowing what she wanted *spoiler* and then deciding that what she wanted was to go to a gynecologist (which is absolutely fine, but ordinary, which I guess was the joke or point?) Everyone is entitled to their opinion of this movie, but I expressed to my brother that I couldn’t give it no more than a 4 out of 10 (I was debating between a 3 and a 4). My brother REALLY enjoyed the movie, and even briefly seemed personally offended that I wasn’t impressed. I’m Kenough to have an opinion that this movie was unimpressive as a whole. lol!
