I didn’t like the movie, and I’m Cuban. I don’t feel like the Cuban culture in either the portions of the film, Cuba or Miami, was well represented. The mom was too easy going with Gabi; not strict enough nor loud enough as most Cuban mothers are (myself included).
For some reason all the main female characters are fat (with the exception of Marta when she was young), something that I find offensive because it’s obviously very stereotypically.
Cuba is a communist country where people cannot just freely decide to go to Miami, on their own. Therefore, it would be almost next to impossible for Andres to get a plane ticket on a whim to go to Miami, unless a family member would request them, because at his age forget it being a job-related visit, and with the latest protests he would have zero chance. Even my husband who is American knows that.
The fact that Andres dies at the beginning of the movie makes the whole thing pointless, not to mention cheesy.
I found the film boring and I rated it one star only because Gloria Estefan is the voice of Marta.
