Cats the movie was a lot of fun and is incredibly experimental, but if you don't understand musicals than don't waste your time or money. The efforts put into this edgy film were there, with big musical names like Jason Derulo, Taylor Swift, and Jennifer Hudson showing an electrified, hip side to their artistry (Though we could have used more Taylor, she's the best artist in the world right now). Francesca Hayward being plucked from the Royal Ballet was a phenomenal choice, this energetic young woman sprung to life and added a needed bright spot of delicacy into the storyline, I was very pleased with her performance and her natural acting ability! Idris Elba also showed off why he's one of the top actors on the planet, I never expected him to fit into this film, but he does so with his over the top performance as the mischevious Macavity. With other actors/actresses Sir Ian, Judi, Rebel and James all adding moments ranging from bizarre, to sad, to raunchy, I felt the only thing that was off was the storyline, but what a shocker, IT'S A MUSICAL. For those of you who don't know, that's how true musical theater is or is made. Cats is a chaotic, fluster of sporadic emotion and song as seen from the perspective of CATS! And being a musical theater human who loves cats, I loved it.
Overall, you'll have to see it, to believe it. In my opinion, I think it's worth going and taking a look. Once again, if you don't understand musicals or enjoy theater, this isn't the film for you, and you'll end up angry or disappointed.
