Quite a claim - had I been asked about the best book on architecture - I would have said, and again without a doubt, Christopher Alexander's two books: "A Pattern Language" and "The Timeless Way of building". All of these books will equip your imagination and release your creativity. But this is a review about The Art of Looking Sideways by Alan Fletcher. Alan was among the most accomplished graphic designers of our times. If anyone has the skill to stimulate the creativity in others, then Alan, and breathtaking book is unsurpassed. It will push any graphic designer way beyond any limits they might not of realised they had. Unlike any other books on design, it teaches designers to see.

For me Amanda was profoundly moving - no tricks film. Not a single moment of pretentious direction or cleverness. There are so many 'look at me' films these days - films made to win awards, and so few 'this is me' films - films made to connect with the natural feelings of an audience. Amanda is an outstanding 'this is me' film. Its simplicity reminded me of Nicolas Philibert's Etre et avoir and Mia Hansen-Love's The Father of My Children.
