One of my all-time favorite "sports" movies. Does a great job introducing the game, exposing it's bare-bones rules and positions, and shows the tough road amateurs take to make it to the big-leagues.
Not sure how this movie gets such a low Rotten Tomatoes score. My best guess is that it's the lack of story permutations. I think that's actually one of its stronger points, frankly. It's a straight line movie that introduces it's characters without frills, and immediately takes you on the road with them. Their lives are simple and brutal and so is the story.
I just watched it again last night and for a movie that came out in the US in 1989, it holds up MUCH better than other, more critically recognized films from the same year. The cult appeal is undeniable, however, and I'd easily rate this at or near the top of the sports movie genre.
