I love J. K. Rowling. She is a fantastic author. However when I heard this book, The Ickabog, was a fairytale she told her children at night before going to bed, I thought the story would be more light hearted, I mean, was she trying to give them nightmares? Maybe in The UK people want to give their kids a hard dose of reality.... people can be cruel, and they definitely are cruel in this book. My biggest complaint is very few people were brave enough to stand up for the TRUTH! Maybe this book was too close to the truth for me. Most of the time I can’t decide if I’m hearing the truth or a pack of lies from my government leaders. So much corruption. I can’t imagine I will ever read it again. Every chapter someone dies. It was so depressing. No one questioned the wrongness of their actions, no one stood up for kindness. I wanted to scream at the characters. All it would have taken was for a group to stand up to spittleworth and he wouldn’t have had any power. I don’t know. You can read the book, just don’t read it to your kids. It’s not happy, it doesn’t leave you happy.
