Sadly, I felt they made a few terrible mistakes in this first episode that will change the tone of the story going forward.
1. Without the mud fight and Lycra’s awe and respect for Billy and the Gyptians, we miss seeing how brave and complicated Lyra is, and the love and mastery she has for her Oxford. Her drinking in the beginning, while I was happy they kept that from the book, was not enough to show her cunning spirit.
2. I remember Ma Costa being more of a warrior than a whimpering delusional mother. Love the actress, but feel that it was another big mistake.
3. Maybe I am mistaking the book and the previous movie, but I seem to remember Lyra having been given a little more knowledge and history of the compass before flying off with Ms. Coulter. The speaking into it without examining it was lame and un-Lyra like.
Really want to love this series. Was hoping the series ment
a true adaptation of a magnificently written piece of literature. Very underwhelmed. Hoping it gets better.
