I knew before I started watching this series what to expect. Unfortunately a lot of Kdramas have become extremely formulaic. There’s the bad guys who’ll get away with a lot of the most outrageous acts, with little to no repercussions. There’s the good guy/gal main leads who’ll continue to pursue the bad guys against all odds, loss after loss and for some reason will continually do stupid things and underestimate the bad guys. Of course throw in some humorous moments, some sweet touching scenes. And finally the last episode, the bad guy might get their comeuppance. Of course a few supporting characters of the good guy will die, just to make it seem impossible to defeat the bad guys. And all the while the good guys remain as dumb as toast.
Rinse, wash repeat and you’ve got the gist of this series. I wanted to enjoy this series and in many respects I did. Great cast of characters who really made this series better than it would’ve been otherwise. Of course the bad guys were way to cookie cutter bad troupes and caricatures of bad guys. The series had some great action scenes, though some went on for far too long.
The premise of this series was these two great boxers, seek to take down a group of thugs, working with a man who, scene after scene keeps telling everyone how dangerous the bad guys are, who keeps saying he knows how the bad guy thinks, etc.. and again and again, the good guys fail. I understand how important it is to have a build up of drama, storylines that’ll keep you on edge and wanting to see more. But when the story keeps moving the narrative in a way that ignores what was just said 10 minutes before, it boggles the mind.
By all means watch, this series, is worth watching. It’s entertaining and the main lead is an amazing actor. His ability to be both compassionate, respectful, funny and strong is not an easy task and he does all this and more and I really enjoyed his interactions with his best friend, which are some of the best moments of this series.
