Not only funny, but brilliant. It is also a slice into the life of fandom of: science fiction, fantasy, war gamers, D&D, Doctor Who, costume wearers, science geeks, teachers, writers, filkers, and the running of conventions. And you get to throw in a murder mystery, a hilarious set of characters that blend wonderfully well and it becomes my favorite comfort food novel of all time. I have to read it at least a couple times a year, and I hear it is a great resource for first-timers to these conventions. The behind-the-story of this story is just as fascinating, too.
One time, I had just moved and all my copies were still buried in boxes. I had missed reading my favorite book. I was going to a sci-fi writers convention with a HUGE book dealers room. There was not one copy of this book anywhere in this room. I was heartbroken. I went down to the local gift store to get a drink and a snack. There, among the latest fashion magazines, was a copy! I was so overjoyed! A little puzzled, for the book had been out for over a decade, but I tried not to dance and bump into the postcard rack. I was so glad so glad to get my "BotDS" fix. This is a special book and I hope every genre fan picks up a copy (or downloads it) and devours it as I do. And read the up-to-date introduction by the author for the story behind the story. It is just as interesting.
