When this movie first came out, I took my dad, an 87 year old WW II veteran, to see it. The D-Day invasion scene moved him to tears. Although he was never directly in harm’s way during his service, he, like all other WW II veterans, felt the deep, emotional impact of the incredible loss of life suffered by American forces during the invasion of France.
Spielberg does a masterful job of telling the compelling story of war-time tragedy. The gruesome depiction of death, dismemberment and terror during the invasion scene is not gratuitous violence but a realistic, cautionary tale of what war is like among infantry soldiers. Anyone who watches Saving Private Ryan should come away with a better sense of the sacrifices made by American men during WW II. It certainly gave me a broader perspective of the horrors of war, the dedication of American soldiers and much deeper appreciation for what was won and lost during this conflict.
Very highly recommended.
