A widowed pastor is experiencing a crisis of faith after the death of his wife, and his sexual relationship with a lonely substitute teacher is causing him tremendous guilt. A young father comes to this pastor for help and guidance, only to be met with the pastor's anguish over the loss of his faith.

This is my favorite Bergman film. If you want to understand transcendence in a film, watch this one. It isn't just my favorite film by Ingmar Bergman. It is his greatest masterpiece.
