I loved Mr Mercedes when I read it for the first time. It's a very fine tuned crime novel that has fantastic, frantic pacing with characters having believable motivations. The end of the trilogy is here and the big scary plot is hypnosis through smartphones? Really? The only real crime here is Hodges send off with this laughable plot. You'd swear it was satire.

The back cover leads you to believe this will be some horrifying jaunt with a preacher and a heroin addict who have a history together but instead you get a long winded, bloated story filled with filler. Events happen and are glossed over instantly, characters struggle for about five minutes before moving on and up until the last 30 pages, nothing exciting or scary happens. If you're looking to be scared into the wee hours of the night, don't read this book as you'll fall asleep before 8pm.
