Candyman (2021) is an interesting movie. Artistic in its visuals and clear in its message and themes.
It is not like the Candyman of 1995 - which I think is a good thing, as making a carbon copy would have made this movie feel redundant and its message repetitive. Fortunately, that is not the case with this movie.
It takes the lead of a few of the themes from the original and expands upon them, weaving them into social commentary. The social commentary itself is not new to the Candyman movies, but this movie serves to literalize the metaphors and themes.
I feel that this Candyman 2021 does not supersede Candyman 1995, but rather works as a beautiful companion piece to it. They flow well together.
This is an interpretive art piece. To look at its surface themes, would be to lose a lot of what makes it special.
Great showing by Nia DaCosta.
