Where to begin, “Every Last Word” has been an educational, emotional and powerful read for me. Parts had me smiling, others had tears welling up in my eyes, and others left me lost for words. You would never in you’re wildest dreams even guess what happens, because even from reading the first few chapters it is completely different towards the end.
Tamara really gives us an insight on what some people with OCD go through daily, the detail and just everything in it shows the struggles that come with the mental health disorder, it helps us to understand how tough simple things and tasks can be for people with OCD. The book also reflects on lots of coping strategies to help with Mental Health disorders and general Mental Health issues too.
There’s a slight plot twist / change of story towards the start but there’s an insanely major plot twist towards the end that takes a fair bit to process, i actually had to put the book down and breathe before continuing. During my read at times it felt as if i were the main character like I was Sam, and AJ made me feel so good it’s hard to explain, his genuine kindness, ‘wiseness’ and perspective on life was so unique to your typical 16 year old boy. He was so understanding and considerate towards Sam, I feel like both AJ and Caroline changed Sam into the type of person she wanted to be.
The whole Poetry element to this book was lovely, it helped Sam find a new passion and coping method with her stresses and struggles with OCD. Which can also inspire others to write poetry of their own. I also love how visual this book is, i have my version of Poets Corner in my Mind, as well as her home, room, AJ’s House and room, school, cafeteria, everything, and all the characters within it.
I love how Hailey stood up for Sam and helped her through her serious times towards the end of the book, i developed a liking for her.
Sue was another character that i absolutely loved, she really helped Sam see things in different perspectives, and helped Sam realise that she needed to focus on what was good for her. She was more than a therapist to Sam, she was like a good old friend who she could tell all her secrets to and never have to worry about them being told to anyone.
Sam had no idea that a lot of the decisions and choices she made were made on her own, she is such a strong character and i think that everyone who reads this novel will learn something from her and the rest of the characters. There is so much more I could say but all in all i strongly recommend!
