I took one reviews advice to start reading all the one and two star reviews. I think those that take away this show as being “too feminist” or “full of misandry” are falling into the hole of why women return to relationships with domestic violence. To an extent, the main character did need to be selfish. The show includes moments of redemption for the harmful men. As a viewer, you might feel empathetic towards them, and this is the same reason many women return and return to bad relationships. Whether it’s gotten bad yet or not, one needs to leave the relationship and they will make mistakes in the journey to escape the abuse. Viewers that don’t see Alex and Sean’s relationship as abusive have a lot of learning to do.

Like many, I enjoyed the acting, scenery, and cinematography. What stuck out to me though was how ultimately, Alex leaves and is able to fulfill her dream through the help of Regina, an extremely unrealistic force. For plot purposes, her character is engaging but in reality, I just think about how many women in Alex’s situation don’t land an unsuspecting friendship with a rich friend that kickstarts their success. It all makes for a great TV show, but the reality of dv victims is a much lengthier, difficult path than Alex’s one year of maid work. The systems in place fail these victims endlessly and it’s a much more difficult process than the roadblocks Alex hit.
Overall, I recommend watching the show. I was engaged and learned from it. It’s just important to keep in mind the flaws of how media represents such topics of domestic violence, alcoholism, and mental illness.
