I thought this was an enjoyable film with plenty of upbeat numbers and a lot of heart. The real scene stealer was Richard E. Grant as a drag queen past their flush of youth. Though there are lots of less exuberant performances where you will find the really poignant moments.
Often the film left me wanting more. It never seemed to quite reach its full potential. There were some interesting things done with the dance/song numbers, and there were a few moving character moments. But it almost felt held down. I think the original story and the songs from the stage show carried the film through.
Something which really bothered me was the bad lip syncing during the songs. I know the songs were recorded in the studio as the actors obviously aren't singing on set (this doesn't bother me), but make sure the actors lips are moving in time. Especially as lip syncing is a staple of many drag acts.
Grumbles aside, I think this is a really important story to tell so I'm glad it has been made into a film for more people to see. And I hope plenty of people do see it, either to be inspired or even educated.
I have not seen the stage musical so I cannot compare the two, but I wonder if the stage version has more to offer.
