i’m currently rewatching this for the third time. i’m the type that easily gets bored with same old repetitive storylines and romance but trust me on this, this is a must-watch.
if you still don’t believe me, i’ll convince you. first of all, the cinematography is BEAUTIFUL. i absolutely love the fact that some scenes were shot in Quebec, Canada. the way the maple leaf flutters on a page, the way he hands here buckwheat flowers with the waves crashing on the shore—all these scenes are shot so, so beautifully. it’s more than that…the lines are lyrical and mysterious, literally every word that hangs from their mouth makes everything come together. no flowery language or long speeches but somehow, it’s so much more. second of all, the actors. there’s nothing more to be said about the chemistry between not only gong yoo + kim go eun but also with the entire cast. i fell in love with gong yoo’s superb acting skills here. the way he managed to portray his role as a lonely, immortal goblin who had been living in pain all his live, finally meeting his bride but only to become conflicted between life and death.. his sorrowful eyes said it all and there was something so tragic about his expressions. kim go eun also did a brilliant job at playing a cheerful, carefree student despite suffering a series of misfortunes. there was nothing annoying or insufferable about her character. she was lovely and one of my favourite female characters..
last but not least, the storyline is very well-paced and brilliantly crafted. the comedy is out of this world, i’ve never laughed so hard at two men bantering back and forth. the interaction between the goblin and the grim reaper was a good enough reason for me to pick this drama up again.. on top of that, the side romance with the grim reaper and sunny kept me watching as well. it was tragic but as much as it hurt, i couldn’t think of a better way for them to be both together. i’m glad we got to see them happy together towards the end. kudos to lee dong wook and yoo in ha for executing their roles so perfectly! overall, this drama is for both the heavy and light hearted ones out there. it’s a serious drama with dashes of comedy here and there. it’s a romance with not your common elements of running in the rain or electrifying eye contact. i loved how the love story wasn’t overly done but felt whole in so many ways. more than all of these genres combined, it’s a drama that will leave you longing for more with profound emotions..
