If ever an album represented a crossroads in an artist's development this is it. All the elements of his earlier work are there and yet on another level you can see a whole host of what must have been up until then held back new ideas also making a profound impact.
Does it work? Yes, and brilliantly too. If fact I would say it is his most successful. Like the previous albums he creates his own world, completely unreal, romantic, timeless, but within that he sounds totally sincere, convinced of its reality, and that is the passport for the listener, if they choose to suspend disbelief.
How if differs from past work though is by being less arcane, more open, musically. One hears that behind it all are incredibly strong songs, every one in its own way with a melody line worthy of any great pop song. Bizarre gems, but gems just the same.
And one cannot underestimate the production by Tony Visconti in adding to the songs coming into their own. Inventive, open, adding a touch here, leaving space there, it creates a diversity of sound to each song, while still allowing the album to sound like a whole concept. Brilliant!
My own personal favourite amongst a host of great songs is 'By The Light Of A Magical Moon'. Totally of its time yet also a timeless classic, for me it is his greatest achievement as a musician. A perfect bridge between where he came from and where he was going to. And that choir of screaming girls as a chorus is just so prescient and freaky, and yet so beautiful and haunting.
A truly classic album that really needs to be reassessed. Enjoy!!!
