I don't have HBO, so I bought Chernobyl on Amazon. I watched the first of five episodes & was blown away. I was a student at Wichita State University in 1986 and remember the event. I wrote a small paper on it for an intro course on anthropology.
Now I've finished all 5 episodes and I wish everyone would see this startling, upsetting, powerful, moving, and utterly compelling work. I've heard some events were misrepresented, and I know one important character was a composite of dozens of real people. I'm fine with that, as I'm confident it's accurate enough. Honestly so many people died so quickly (and yet slowly) as the chaos and tragedy unfolded, that it's a wonder even after all these years that we have a good idea of who/what caused the utter incompetence that resulted in such horror.
I can't help but worry that this could be repeated in any number of ways, not necessarily at a nuclear power plant. Disregarding science, rewarding CYA behaviors, creating toxic systems, and maintaining a lack of accountability will have consequences.
