First off, a psychological thriller has to be thrilling. That's the first thing. There is no mystery since the plot gave itself away much too early, and the husband, Jake, is so one-dimensional and comically evil that it is almost laughable.
It reads like a fan fiction novel. I think people who rated this book 4 or above are just not avid readers/are new to what an actually good psychological thriller is. Watching Lifetime and Netflix movies doesn't constitute as the same thing -- sorry not sorry.
I am a little disturbed that he wants a mentally ill teen girl for his pleasure as well...not sure if it needed that angle. But hey, freedom of expression, right.
Also, the plot is at times contrived because the protagonist never takes advantage of her times to escape or to save herself. So you end up having no one to root for. To make matters worse, it is in first-person, so you have to end up being in the head of someone you don't even like/relate to.
This book really isn't worth your time.
