I binged the series last night and was left with a lot of questions.
From a Marketing Exec at a pharmaceutical to going to Paris instead of her boss, with that same rank, Emily in Paris is probably best explained as the storyteller’s laziness in crafting a story. It felt like a hybrid of Sex & the City and The Gossip Girl with a tad bit touch of The Devil Wears Prada (like Emily’s boss). Emily’s ignorance towards learning French and their customs are cringeworthy.
And as a Communications and PR professional myself, I was astounded by the lack of originality in the protagonist’s idea of marketing. It ain’t making “something famous on Instagram”. It takes a lot of blood and sweats and greats campaign ideas to make anything famous, and yes, it doesn’t happen overnight. And the way, every man in France seems to be instantly smitten by Emily is unnecessary.
Generally if a person goes to a different country, without the understanding of the language and saying “Fake it till you make it”, any person would be scared of a new job, working extra hard, trying to understand the customer base, will do market research, and will have extreme anxiety.
And yet, after all this, I guess Emily in Paris felt like an escape route from this crazy world that we’re living right now. It is so dumb that you’ll end up liking it because who doesn’t want to forget all about the pandemic and everything else for a few hours?
