Convoluted. On the one hand, the direction, sound track, musical elements, cinematography, is excellent and engaging. Phillips continues to solidify his status as an artist, as well as director, ascending from the likes of his goofy, yet highly entertaining, 2000s comedies. On the other hand, this movie’s ball and chain is its lack of plot, it drags from scene to scene, grotesquely grasping for a thread of structure to drive the narrative towards a satisfying conclusion. Instead, once the screen fades to black, and the credits begin to roll, you say to yourself, “huh?”, and not in a good way. Though, I was still entertained by the stronger first half.
