So many sacrilegious moments and downright deception into Christianity in this film! The movie, and author of the book, clearly believe people following religion are willfully and deceptively living peons in chains by the control of leaders who 'create' religion from the last one all the way back to contrivance. It's not surprising that Hugh Grant is an atheist, who unfortunately has missed the greatest aspect of religion; a personal relationship with God that is euphoric and real. Being in the Church is not being led by control or doctrine, abusive leadership or control or whatever (which is what this movie in its entirety is all about), which I agree is awful and horrible that it still exists in Churches today. Gods love for every single wayward heart and soul, the love and closeness to the Holy Spirit which is available, by free will of choice, not coercion or by ill intent, to everybody, is what is important. To make dungeons and dead corpses out of the beauty and freedom and joy of living for God in a healthy Church is abysmally treacherous to the young at heart reaching out for God.. beware of this awful generalization of the Church, portrayed by an evil man filled with control and malice carving people as wooden pieces for a board game! I can assure you, God is not a part of such organizations and 'Churches' that operate as this movie suggests. You can feel God like a mist after the rain, a joyfilled laugh, a loving embrace and a warm smile with the sun shining on your shoulders. Nothing like this movie suggests at all.
