I think hands down this was one of the best shows I've watched this year. The character development among many characters gave such an incredible depth to this show. The plot can seem predictable at times, but there are some minor and major twists that are unforeseen that keep you on your toes to step onto the next episode. I really hope for future seasons to be confirmed. Honestly, I think this was a major step-up for HBO Max to really set itself apart from other streaming services. For most Asians, we tend to expect the stereotyping of Asian cultures from western interpretations because that is the norm. I honestly expected another white savior narrative. However, I was wrong: the authenticity really shined through with the presentation of Japanese culture and society since Jake Adelstein is large in stature but is depicted to stay humble as he learns his place is at the bottom of highly bureaucratic Japanese corporate culture. I really enjoyed and respected this depiction of humility as if the writer and director were trying to convey the culture shock to the western audience or anyone who lacks an understanding of Japanese culture beyond the conventional false perspective that Japan is simply all about the kawaii culture (mostly through heavy and partial consumtion of anime, manga, and video games in other countries).
