The ending leaves me puzzled. Could it have been...1.) The little girl climbing the apple tree... was it Martha's child that supposedly had died but didn't die and lived and somehow was mysteriously switched with the other mother laboring elsewhere whose baby may have died who was being attended by the midwife Martha should have had? But that's probably not the case since paramedics showed up at the scene. Or, it was more likely... 2.) That was a scene way into the future of some other little girl living in a house Martha used to live in, or maybe a future daughter or granddaughter or great-granddaughter of Martha playing amongst all the apple trees that were planted and grown over the years from all the apple seeds Martha had sprouting in her refrigerator. In the court room, she did say her daughter smelled like an apple.
