My favorite movie. Partially for nostalgic reasons, but I think it would be my favorite even without the nostalgia. I first watched it when I was 5 or 6 years old and I was terrified of certain parts for years, but still wanted to watch it constantly (same with The Last Unicorn). What's so great about it? Concept designs by Brian Froud. David Bowie starring as the villain (beware the bulge!). Five original songs by David Bowie. Puppets by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. George Lucas as executive producer, sharing editing duties with Jim Henson. Screenplay by Terry Jones (with some help in the form of finishing touches from Jim Henson, George Lucas, and some others). You know, Terry Jones of Monty Python fame. This is a sometimes dark Fantasy/Comedy and it is extremely funny at certain points. Especially if you're a fan of Monty Python style humor. My one suggestion is to watch it with subtitles on at least once (preferably the first time). Even if you've seen it countless times before. Some of the dialogue is very fast and a bit quiet (specifically the goblins that turn over the tiles) but hilarious when you actually figure out what they're saying. There are a few more times captions may come in handy. I'm a bit hard of hearing, but I've spoken with other die hard fans that had no ideas what some characters were saying, or thought they were just gibbering and there was no actual dialogue. The effects and puppets may look dated to people who only watch blockbusters with $100 million budgets and slick CGI. I prefer to look at them as another form of artistry that gives the film a completely different feel. Watch my favorite movie with an open mind... and captions on. :)

Probably the most faithful adaptation of a book to the screen that I have seen. The animation isn't the best, the transitions are a bit strange, and the dialogue is very fast as if they tried to pack every line of the book in (they nearly succeeded). However, it is still a delightful rendition. Voice acting is top notch. Christopher Lee as Death, as is traditional. It's wonderful to see Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat Garlick come to life. I've heard some people say that if you haven't read the book before watching, you won't be able to keep up with the jokes and plot. I watched it before reading the associated novel (though I had read several other Discworld titles) and had no problem. I keep going back and watching it again! Which isn't common for me with a movie. I discovered it about a week ago and have watched it about 6 times since then. Even better, it made me aware of the Witches storyline in Discworld. I love Sir Terry Pratchett's writing style and I'm also a huge fan of High Fantasy. The Witches series has quickly become my favorite Discworld storyline. I can't get enough of Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg. I imagine because the series is out of circulation, it is available in its entirety on YouTube. Easily found by searching the title.
