I have been a huge Bethesda fan over the years. I played TES Morrowind when it was released, and I have been hooked ever since. I’ve been disappointed lately, however. Starfield is no exception. The stories and character development are just not as good anymore; I don’t feel invested in the story or my companions.
There are also a number of glaring bugs that have so far gone unpatched in Starfield. One of the most annoying is the shield strength bug. It seems that there is some overlap between my character’s shield perk and crew shield perks that cause my shields to drop below even their base value. Removing the crew members does not correct this problem, as it seems the ship is locked into this new lower value. This has been discussed for months online, and it has still not been corrected.
I’ve heard people say that we were expecting too much. What?! We’ve waited many years for a large open world game that wasn’t a massive multiplayer. The release date for Starfield was pushed back several times. I realize that there was a pandemic, but couldn’t a lot of this work been done from home. Finally, the Microsoft release event with Todd Howard way over sold the game. For instance, there are supposed to be over 1000 planets to explore. Well, that sounds great, but the planets are just empty wastelands with repeating largely repeating topography. The locations that you finally come across are repeated on several planets (right down to interactive object placement). I don’t want 1000 planets if they’re all boring.
There are many fetch quests without any depth. Character complexity is likewise shallow. The story could’ve been great, but the way that it is executed has no impact. The conclusion is anti-climactic.
This game is not a success. It’s not a terrible game, but it isn’t a good one either (especially given the amount of time it took). This was certainly not what I was hoping for. I don’t care what anyone else online is writing; this is my opinion. I won’t be playing Starfield anymore until they make some major corrections. Perhaps it will improve over time, but right now, I have no interest in continuing to play it.
I just hope that the next large Bethesda release does not trend in this direction.
