This series has so much to offer, and yet manages to explore its characters in an intimately understated way. Brilliant, writing, acting, everything.

Gloomy. Brooding. Sinister. Tense. Unnerving. And set amid glaciers and snow. Just my kinda show!

Just the scene from s1e8, where Martin Freeman experiences such cognitive dissonance that he appears to attempt to strangle himself in his car, earns this show at least 4 stars. I'm surprised Freeman didn't receive an award for the acting in that scene. He plays the antihero with aplomb.

A pleasant, light, quaint distraction. Had the prospect of examining psychological distress in the context of contemporary western lifestyles (albeit a caricature of such a lifestyle). But ended with schmaltz. Scenery stole the show.

Implausible. Cloying. Worn-out themes as tattered as Harold's shoes. Jams too much - too many ideas/too much sentimentality - into a story that could've otherwise been thought-provoking (and NOT because of themes related to mental health. I would've appreciated a story revolving entirely around trekking spontaneously as a means to escape a drab life of work forward by retirement). I guess the novel, which I've not read, couldn't have served as the screenplay if the muliple themes had been reduced.

An embarrassingly derivative product of numerous embarrassingly unsophisticated precursors from the US and UK. The predictable computer whiz is a repellent character. The presence of such a character alone renders any potential value of the show, absurdly diminished.

Superb acting and a solid story with suspense and less emphasis on clever twists for the sake of appearing clever than several other series in the genre.

I was surprised at the quality of the acting: i was expecting far less. The lead isn't melodramatic. Worth a second season. Unfortunately it's been cancelled.

4 or 5 clichés wrapped into one. It seemed to me that the screenwriter/author was split between i) a brooding reflection on mental illness in the context of harsh political and economic pressures, ii) a hackneyed romance iii) a Nazi-hunting thriller iv) a cloying obstetrics-themed 'overcoming the odds' story, and v) a token glance at art history. Not unenjoyable. But too piecemeal and far fetched - hence lacking poignancy - for my taste. If only one or even two of the multiple themes had been focused on exclusively.

I felt that this movie was neither overstated nor understated. I believe it portrayed believable characters. I liked the traits of the protagonists. They were humble, quiet, affable. Some reviewers claim that their behaviours were occasionally too nonchalant given the backdrop of terminal illness. But i found their behaviours plausible. Two adult men could behave like the characters in the film in such a circumstance. And i couldn't criticise them on the ground of emotional privation, or for lacking 'maturity'. A beautiful and gentle representation of some important topics. And that's something one doesn't find in many films in 'this' category. I am thankful that this story was written and the film made.
