Once in perhaps a life-time comes a film that is defies all descriptions. All we who have seen it and been captivated by it, can only try to express the rollercoaster of emotions each of us felt in our own way. For me as a gay man, there are scenes that resonate with my own love affair with another gay man, and which ended in much the same way. Timothee Chamalet as Elio, a portrayal of a sexually confused young man. is unforgettable, and Arnie Hammer as Oliver, a sensitive, tender mature man also struggling with his own true nature, is wonderful. Oliver tickling Elio, The widely discussed peach scene, the glances at each other, the waterfall scene. Their night of love. The first kiss. A Father who knows what is happening with his son and tries to prepare him for the heartbreak that is coming. A film beautifully made, superb casting, and a director who has given us a masterpiece to be watched over and over again thanks to DVD. The final scene of Elio by the fireplace, every kind of emotion on his lovely face as he realizes the man he loved is gone. Will melt the hardest heart and cause your tears to flow, as mine do each time I watch it. And am reminded of an actress who played Martha in Whose afraid of Virginia Woolf, being asked from whence came the emotion when her husband tells her their son is dead. Her answer was that she couldn't explain, just that 'something happened'. I wonder if Timothee experienced that 'something' too...
And I cannot think of any other director who would have ended his film this way. It is absolutely mesmerizing, and beautiful. A film to treasure..
I have the audio book read by Armie Hammer, I have the book. My cup of happiness overflows.
They and us have moved on, but the film is forever.
