I like scifi. Stargate (film) is scifi. 100%. I never understood the hype behind the shows, but I do remember seeing this movie as a child, and not really remembering much about it. I finally revisited it today and found myself having quite enjoyed it. It works as a stand alone story. More importantly, it opens up the story to so much potential, that there was no way they were going to cover it all in a movie that had finish the story it started, which was the journey of both Daniel and Jack, respectively. And before you beat this movie over the head of how it is inferior to the shows, remember you don't have the shows unless the foundation is set, which is this movie. A decent movie.
The movie feels grounded, immersive, I'm actually quite impressed with the trip through the stargate. That shot really sold me on the experience and I don't think I've seen it replicated often or well enough to be remembered. There is a lot of sand as the movie takes place in an area that feels like it has a theme around the idea of Egyptian culture. I like it. It might feel too slow to others, but this movie has action, isn't strictly an action film. It's a scifi.
And surprisingly, the movie does NOT feel dated. You are given the knowledge of when this movie takes place, but there isn't anything that really stands out like sore thumb or much at all to remind you that the modern era is in the 1990's.
Solid directing, solid script, solid acting, solid crews behind the scenes. They do have some odd costumes that I don't think would fly today and made me uncomfortable to look at. The movie is filled to brim with lore and possibility. I appreciate the concept of language barriers and how the story took it's time and properly fleshed out the issue and solution, while also fleshing out the characters.
And that score is one to remember one, especially the one for the Stargate!
A 4 out of 5. A good scifi watch.
