Anyone who is writing this movie off as self indulgent sounds like an idiot. I have read multiple reviews saying that this film is low quality because they felt it wasnโt relatable to an audience and that it was simply a passion project by Shia La Beouf. This movie was remarkable. Shia La Beoufโs acting was amazing. Iโve also seen reviews saying that the lack of resolution at the end was a dealbreaker, but I think it really added to the realism of the film. Abusive relationships donโt always come to a definitive resolution. In fact, they rarely do. A child can still love their parent despite abuse. The parent doesnโt always apologize and sometimes that lack of closure is the only way to portray that realism. The movie is great. Itโs sad. Be ready for that. Itโs real and it feels real. Take it or leave it.
