Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict and Jonathan Pryce as Pope Francis do a stellar job of capturing the differences and commonalities of the two personalities.
The film does well at laying out the interplay of two passionate and dedicated scholars as they wrestle with getting the Church beyond its struggles with tradition for the sake of tradition, (including its systematic burial of the chronic source of scandal) and nicely displays how Pope Francis has worked to win "converts" within the Church toward a return to Luke 10:27, (Deuteronomy 6:5 / Leviticus 19:18):
New Testament

~Luke 10:27

"And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might."
~Deuteronomy 6:5
"You shall not take vengeance or bear any grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself."
~Leviticus 19:18
