I've always been a big fan of the classic 80's shows. Sadly, almost every reboot has been mediocre. They either take themselves too seriously or go dark. They never seemed to include the magic elements from the old shows and just feel hollow when they get modernised.
When my family and I sat down to watch the first episode of the rebooted Magnum PI we really didn't have high hopes. On the surface, it looked like everything we feared. Yet by the end we all agreed it was actually pretty great and has been getting better with every episode since.
Don't expect writing that will stretch your brain. It knows to be light-hearted and includes the modern action scenes that money buys and look great in trailers.
What's different is that after each episode you just feel good. I actually find myself smiling, which does not easily happen as a result of watching tv! It's quickly become a favourite and I'm already re-watching the whole series from the start.
Jay Hernandez is a brilliant lead. His version of Magnum is still just as earnest as Selleck's classic Thomas but Jay brings a different quality that's unique to him. He is one of the few actors who can smile and it actually reaches his eyes with a twinkle (yeah, that sounds strange but when you watch the show you'll know what I mean). Perdita Weeks is also fantastic as a completely new Higgins. The dynamic from the original show will of course be classic but I'm really enjoying this different partnership. The whole cast has chemistry and it's great entertainment. I do wish they'd give bigger and more dramatic storylines to the supporting characters though.
This show needs to be seen for what it is: something completely new and separate from the old version. In fact, the more they deviate from the original the better it's getting.
Please CBS, give this show many years! I know there are people out there who haven't found it yet and in this period of general doom and gloom it's a shining example of being entertained but coming away feeling better than before.
