I loved it! Unfortunately, I think because of money, the story was a bit too rush. I think the romance with Robert and the sex scene was unnecessary. She just left her strict community and was having sex with another man? Doesn't make sense to me. Or they wanted to show how her sexual life had improved.
I think they focused too much about the negative things about her community and excluded everything that was good. Esty is brave, but too brave. She didn't cried once while she was homeless in Germany. I would have remember that in Williansburg I had a hot meal and a comfortable bed, even though my abusive husband and mother in law make it unpleasant. I would have missed my grandmother and the rituals that I do since I was born.
After, I watched "Shtisel" and "One of us" on Netflix, I could have a better understanding of this culture.
So I could understand a bit why Esty wasn't informed of the death of her grandmother. And why they didn't want to speak with her.
I hope that Netflix give us a second season, with a better budget and more time to tell this story properly.
