I remember reading and enjoying this book about forty years ago. I find myself thinking about it now because the premiss of the story was to wonder what the influence of a much warmer climate would have on life in the West of Scotland. Hanley tells of a family who go on holiday on one of the islands off the west coast. I don't recall many details but the narrative ponders to what extent the national character would change, become more Latin or Mediterranean: much interest in the effect on the libido of the Scottish male!
