I stopped watching when one of the characters said, “I have LatinX relatives.” Latinx is a term that emerged in academic circles a few years ago. Only 2 or 3% of Latin Americans use this term and many do not identify with it at all. It felt pretentious to use this term and would have appreciated someone dive deep on the evolution of this term. I get it, you want to be politically correct, inclusive, etc. The term originally emerged in the Latino trans community where gendered terms did not include non binary identities. Latinx has since been coopted and commodified in various sectors of our society, apparently now in this TV show. The majority of us do not identify this way at all! It felt like the writers or director is trying too hard to be woke or they did not do their homework on how the term Latinx has been a point of contention within the Latin American community around the world. Rather than Latinx, some are simply using Latin or Latine, rather than the Americanized term Latinx that many of my people cannot even pronounce in Spanish.
