The absolute perfect balance between realistic, raw emotions, and eloquent, artistic fiction.
This film is definitely not what mainstream media is used to, but is definitely something to be appreciated. The 'indie' choice of story and screenplay make for a unique film that nobody saw coming in 2021.
Zendaya and John David's performances were exceptional to the non-actor eye - beautifully delivering the intended dynamic emotions at every stage of their fight.
But the trophy definitely goes to Sam Levinson for the phenomenal writing! The flow and concision transformed every monologue (practically) into poetry, despite all the profanities, and was truly what made Malcom & Marie.
Most negative reviews comment on the fact the whole film is simply a prolonged argument, which isn't wrong. But it pays to listen to what the characters are saying and how it parallels real life. Malcom and Marie are 'toxic' but so are too many relationships. They are oftentimes 'annoying' and 'unnecessary' but then, who isn't? The entertainment value of this film comes from Levinson's ability artistically capture all the elements of such a tumultuous relationship and deliver the turmoil that so many of us would be experiencing in a such a situation.
You don't have to be happy with the story for it to be a good film.
