If you read the 1-star reviews, 90 percent of them are complaining about the 'sickening and disgusting woke gay agenda' of episode 3. Not even veiled homophobia and hate.
The other 10 percent are upset that it's not a gorefest of zombie slaughter, and are complaining it's all about relationships, which of course totally misses the point of the Zombie genre (the genre is all about relationships and morality plays) and it also misses the point of the story the show is telling (the relationship between Joel and Ellie).
In other words, it's getting review bombed by Incels. So you can ignore nearly all the negative reviews. Read them if you must and you'll see what I mean.
It's hard coming from someone who played the game and rates the game as 10/10 and the best ever. No other game had me that invested in the story, and the outcome like that game did. The Show so for is honestly an 8.5. Visuals are stunning, and attention to detail is on point. I do find myself being jarred out of the show at times to compare it to the game, no matter how hard I try.
The themes are hammered home a little too hard at times, and they've made Joel a bit more morally gray. They also stripped out all the action and gunplay (it's a show and not a game after all) and while this is mostly for the better, they arguably stripped out too much. I've only really been concerned for the safety of the protagonists twice (in episode 2, and to a lesser extent in episode 4, and I'm 4 episodes deep).
If its anything like the game, stick around for the ending. The denouement of the game shattered me and had me thinking for months, and hopefully the show does it service.
